.TH times PL "11-MAR-2009 PL ploticus.sourceforge.net"

.SH Ploticus time support
Ploticus can plot time values directly.
There are several
.ig >>
<a href="functions.html">
.>>
\0functions
.ig >>
</a>
.>>
that may be useful when working with time values.

.ig >>
<br><br><br>
.>>

.SH Supported time notations
\fBClock times\fR must be in the range of 0:00:00 to 24:00:00.
\fBElapsed times\fR have no upper limit, eg.
\fC233:58:00\fR is a valid elapsed time.
Time values must always be positive and
the minutes and seconds components must always be < 60.
.LP
The default notation is \fChh:mm\fR.
.LP
\fBClock time notations\fR
.IP \(bu
\fChh:mm\fR (example 11:25)
.IP \(bu
\fChh:mm:ss\fR (example 11:25:02)
.LP
\fBElapsed time notations\fR
.IP \(bu
\fChhh:mm\fR (example 42:25)
.IP \(bu
\fChhh:mm:ss\fR (example 42:25:02)
.IP \(bu
\fCmm:ss\fR (example 25:02) (minutes component must be < 60)
.IP
Seconds are floating-point values (see Fractional seconds, below).

<br><br><br>
.>>

.SH Using various time notations
To work with data having other time notations, use the
\fIformat\fR portion of the
\fCxscaletype\fR or \fCyscaletype\fR attributes of \fBproc areadef\fR.
.br
For example:
.nf
.ft C
\0#proc areadef
  xscaletype: time mm:ss
.ft R
.fi

.ig >>
<br><br><br>
.>>

.SH Display-only notations
In addition to the time arithmetic notations shown above,
the following formats may be used to display clock time values:
.IP \(bu
\fChh:mma\fR (examples: 11:25am, 0:40am 2:20pm)
.IP \(bu
\fChhA\fR (examples: 11AM, 0AM, 2PM)
.IP \(bu
Others:
\fChh:mm:ssa m:ss hh mm m ss s\fR

.ig >>
<br><br><br>
.>>

.SH Basic unit
The basic time unit is a \fBminute\fR, regardless of
which notation is in use.
Axis stubs and tics may be
expressed in \fChours\fR or \fCseconds\fR if desired.

.ig >>
<br><br><br>
.>>

.SH Fractional seconds
Seconds are represented as floating point values, and by default
only non-zero decimal components are displayed (\fC%02g\fR).
To control the displayed decimal format of seconds,
use a printf-style double format specifier instead of \fCss\fR
in the time notation string.
For example, \fChh:mm:%02.02f\fR
.LP
Stubs may be incremented by fractions of seconds, eg. \fCstubs: inc 0.2 seconds\fR

.ig >>
<br><br><br>
.>>

.SH Key to notation codes
.LP
\fChhh\fR = hours, elapsed time, no upper limit
.br
\fChh\fR = hours, 00 to 24 (00 to 11 for am/pm notation)
.br
\fCh\fR = hours, 0 to 24, (0 to 11 for am/pm notation)
.br
\fCmm\fR = minute 00 to 59
.br
\fCm\fR = minute 0 to 59
.br
\fCss\fR = second 00.0 to < 60.0 (floating point, see above)
.br
\fCs\fR = second 0.0 to < 60.0 (floating point, see above)
.br
\fCa\fRi = am/pm notation (use \fCA\fR capitals e.g. AM or PM)

.ig >>
<br><br><br>
.>>

.SH Notes
.LP
With am/pm notation noon is shown as eg. \fC12N\fR; midnight is eg. \fC0AM\fR or \fC12AM\fR
