Thank you installing debian-reference (DR).

This family of documentation packages have their contents in:

  /usr/share/doc/debian-reference-common/README.gz        (this file)
  /usr/share/doc/debian-reference-common/html/index.html  (index file)
  /usr/share/doc/debian-reference-common/html/*           (contents)
  /usr/share/debian-reference/debian-reference    (this starts browser)

== TRANSLATION ==

Currently, English document is rewritten completely new for lenny.

Translated documents are based on outdated version of Debian Reference.
(See below for more details.)

== BUGS ==

If you find any issues or shortcomings of this DR, please file bug reports
using reportbug command against "debian-reference" package. See also,
http://bugs.debian.org for how Debian BTS works.

For bug report, it is strongly recommended to write what you want as
alternative. "It does not work...", "I can do this...", etc. are not so
useful. "This section should be rewritten as ...." is what I want.

For simple grammer errors and spell errors, you can directly edit upstream
wiki pages linked from http://wiki.debian.org/DebianReference .

== TODO ==

* Close CVS at SF.NET
* Commit source to Subversion at DDP.
* Translate using po4a infrastructure.

=== TRANSLATION BASE VERSIONS ===

All translation documents are based on Etch or woody version of English
document. Etch version itself did not get updated completely to reflect
latest situation. This means that translated documents contain information
not applicable to current system. Since many generic Linux console tutorial
contents are useful for non-English reading people, I kept the older
translation for lenny but at the same time set them to install English
version.

Also shorter "quick reference" series were dropped since it was mostly package
management with apt-get/apt-cache. That part of DR gave impression that
installing from mixture of source (stable/testing/unstable) is OK. This is
not true.

The following are the document version list of:
 * the last available English SGML document version.
 * the base English SGML document version used for translation.

* Some translation (debian.sgml < 1.88) still encourage mixed source
  for APT too much. Be careful doing preference tricks.
* Older translation (debian.sgml < 1.120) do not mention aptitude enough.
* Most translation (tune.sgml <1.155) still use old method to create
  locale customized terminals.
* Most translation (gateway.sgml <1.200) still use old contents. It is
  completely updated by Thomas. Now networking set up is clear for all.
* Finnish(fi), Russian (ru) and Dutch (nl) are stalled.

== How this document is created ==

First I recommend you to download the source package to inspect it.
 $ apt-get source debian-reference

Here is hint for how I update this package contents using wiki content.

1. WIKI document at http://wiki.debian.org/DebianReference is used to update
source tree under "wiki/". (make diff in "wiki/" is how I check.)

2. The update is inspected by me and copied to "en/". (make renew)

3. The package is build and uploaded.

Happy Hacking!

Osamu
